I'm back...and we need to talk about the Odyssey
It's a fire. It needs to be tended every single day by someone whose whole heart is in it. And the truth is my whole heart has never been anywhere else. So I'm going to stop pretending otherwise and just come home.

So...we came together and I said a prayer for our school. I can only be honest about what happened next, but I don't know what else to call it other than a little miracle. The entire mood of the school improved immediately.

Whatever it takes, we will encourage and support you on that journey as a parent--but we will always insist that you hold your promises in the parent contract to never interfere or attempt to solve a problem for your child. That is the very foundation of our learning model.

Sometimes I play the 'what if?" game and ponder on what would have happened if I hadn't changed course back then...and all I can say is I am grateful beyond words that God saw what I could not.
Read the letter →The Odyssey is not just a game...
The awe-inspiring display of bravery and integrity one of our eagles exhibited when they made the ultimate choice to stay true to their character, betraying the Phantom Pirate, fully aware that it would lead to their character's death and elimination from the game. This selfless act was a powerful lesson in honor and moral courage.

I had a glimpse of what we would become when I started this journey, but even I didn't really know just how life-changing it would be for all of us. In that moment, hold on to your loved ones, hold on to your calling in life, and everything else you believe in. Hold on as if life depended on it--because it does! Your life and the lives of others.
Read the letter →Two and a half hours of gut-wrenching soul testing later...
What began as an accountability check-in on the Apprenticeship Prep Badge somehow morphed into what I suppose for lack of a better word you would have to call a debate, but instead of words and ideas being slung around the room, it was deeply held beliefs, firm convictions, and bits of heart and mind and soul.

So...whether the tears that come tomorrow are caused by joy or pain, delight or regret, please encourage them and cheer them on! And then step back and let them struggle. You will slowly but surely see the magic happen.
Read the letter →Session Roundup (5/20/22)
It was seeing eagles tested to their limits, figuratively (or literally in a few cases) forced into a corner where they had to know for certain, without a doubt, what they believe in, and then marching on to meet the challenges head on.
Read the letter →A word of gratitude (4/23/22)
But through a series of events and little miracles, that perhaps I will share at another time, I took a step of faith and after that I feel like God opened up the way for me to be a guide at the school in addition to its founder.

The crown's terms were simple--the eagles were to begin doing conditioning. As soon as half of them voted to give up the traitor who had torn up the royal decree and banish them out of their colony, the conditioning would stop. They collectively refused and never even came close to a majority vote even as the planks, pushups, situps and ladders kept coming. They rallied together yet again.
Read the letter →The Price of Freedom (3/1/22)
The original eagle who had not moved from his grueling position for literally an hour talked about how it was no longer about a silly game we were playing. This was his real stance for his convictions. He spoke of his ability to endure only because of being surrounded by his friends.

But at the end of the day, this is what we signed up for. We signed up for it as parents. And our children signed up for it as learners.

We know the incredible potential each of your children hold, and feel lucky that we get to embark on their Hero's Journey with them every day! Create the environment, trust the Eagles, and they will soar!

I also suspect few of you may realize how much it means to me that each of you were willing to take a leap of faith this year and launch our school! I know the amount of trust it takes to leave your child with a new teacher or a new guide or a new school. That is not an easy thing to do. Yet, each of you did! And for that I will always be grateful.
